Ways to give

From a supply closet to a community anchor

For years, a single volunteer from the local Methodist church kept a small food supply and opened the doors once a month — or whenever a BCOC social worker needed food for a client. When he moved to Florida in 2004, the Quakertown Ministerium — 12 houses of worship — stepped in to take over and expand the effort, giving it a name: the Quakertown Food Pantry.

The pantry became an independent 501(c)(3) in 2008, moved to the Quakertown Borough complex in 2010, and hasn't slowed down. Today we serve 20 to 60 families every day we're open, providing 3 days of meals with each visit.

Every person here — from the board president to the Tuesday evening shelf-stocker — is a volunteer.

How we got here

1980s
A small supply for emergencies
The Bucks County Opportunity Council begins keeping a small food supply for clients in need — available when a social worker identifies a family that needs help.
1990s – 2004
One volunteer, once a month
A single volunteer from the local Methodist church takes over running the pantry. Doors open once a month, or whenever a BCOC social worker needs food for a client.
2004
The Ministerium steps in
When the lone volunteer moves to Florida, the Quakertown Ministerium — 12 local houses of worship — takes over. Hours expand to five days a week, and the effort gets a name: the Quakertown Food Pantry.
2008
Independent 501(c)(3)
The pantry becomes a fully independent nonprofit. Every board member takes an active role in day-to-day operations.
2010
A permanent home
The pantry moves into the maintenance wood shop offered by the Quakertown Borough at 101 N. Third Street — our home to this day.
2019
Girl Scouts spark a new idea
A local Girl Scout troop runs a toiletry drive for their Bronze Award to benefit the pantry. The idea evolves into our Amazon Wish List — starting with toiletries and eventually expanding to food items.
2020
Online donations go live
PayPal and Venmo donation options launch, making it possible for supporters to give from anywhere.
